Gladys Knight Was Fabulous!!!
My sister and I had a fantastic time at the Warner Theater (Washington, DC) this past Saturday night watching Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. She was the consummate professional, wowing the audience with her beautiful voice and fluid moves from start to finish! Everybody in the house was singing along with her when she performed, and she made everyone feel comfortable by chatting between sets. It was like a good night at the club!
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy seemed as if she was NOT 70, but about 30 years old -- she had the moves and was dressed in a beautiful black, shimmering tuxedo-type pantsuit. Her voice was as strong as ever, and her projection was fantastic according to our usher. Toward the end of the show, she praised her band for their hard work and mentioned that one of the backup singers is her protege.
She sang many of her old songs, including I (Who Have Nothing), Neither One of Us, Midnight Train to Georgia, Love Overboard, I've Got to Use My Imagination, You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me, The Way We Were/Try to Remember. She reminisced about performing at the old Howard Theater in DC, the early days with Motown, and their hit, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, which she intimated that Marvin Gaye later covered.
Bubba, her brother, came out and did a few numbers, including "Happy," and his dance moves took me back! It was good to see him -- his jacket had on the back, two hands coming in from each side, and it said, "Hug Me," a nice touch. Bubba was dressed to the 9's, so to speak!
The evening ended with a wonderful church song, "Let the Church Say Amen!" Everyone left with smiling faces and some wonderful memories. I highly recommend catching her show as she tours across the country -- it's unforgettable!
